Louis Tomlinson and Steve Aoki hit #1 in 41 countries with Just Hold On

Former One direction member Louis Tomlinson's new single Just Hold On has hit number one on the iTunes charts for 41 countries. DJ Steve Aoki, who co-wrote and co-produced the track, announced the big news on his Twitter.

It's quite an impact for Tomlinson's first solo single. The English star performed the dance pop song live with Aoki on the X Factor UK over the weekend. It was an emotional performance for Tomlinson, whose mother Johannah passed away on Wednesday. The 43-year-old was battling with leukaemia.

Louis Tomlinson: "That was harder than I ever imagined."

After the performance the One Direction star took to Twitter to address his fans:

"That was harder than I ever imagined. I want to thank everyone around me and all of the amazing fans out there that made that so special!

"Feeling so much love around me and my family. Mum would have been so fucking proud (sorry for swearing mum) love you!"

The singer also thanked his collaborator:

"Also @steveaoki, you have been such a rock and inspiration throughout this! Pure talent and a real gent!"

Dance pop hit a new direction for former 1D star

Just Hold On is driven by Steve Aoki's synths and Tomlinson's ridiculously catchy vocal. It's not clear how long ago the song was written but it seems to match Tomlinson's current situation with lines like "If it all goes wrong, Darling just hold on, The sun goes down and it comes back up, The world it turns no matter what."

Aoki breaks up the pop feel with an EDM drop mid-song, although it's more of a summery vibe even in the drop. The song hit number one on the UK iTunes chart, number two in the US and number on iTunes dance in the US, as well as 50 additional countries.

One Direction bandmates reunite for Just Hold On debut

Tomlinson's One Direction bandmates were all present at the X Factor performance, and supported him backstage. The performance marked the first time the four-piece were reunited in 12 months. Niall Horan flew in from New York to be there.

Ironically the huge success of Just Hold On knocked off former One Direction singer Zayn Malik off the top spot on the UK iTunes chart. Malik has been enjoying success with his Taylor Swift collaboration I Don't Wanna Live Forever. The electro-R&B song is cut from the soundtrack of the forthcoming film Fifty Shades Darker.
