Trance is a form of electronic dance music which was first heard in Germany in the late 1980s. The early 1990s saw the genre develop more fully and expand globally. Trance is now catered for in a range of high profile festivals and events worldwide.

The music is defined by a tempo range of 125 and 150 BPM, making it slightly faster than house music. Trance features repeating melodies and a song structure which builds intensity up to a series of peaks and drops. Trance refers to a hypnotic state, which is reflected in the music by the changing dynamics throughout the songs.

Influential trance acts include Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Tiësto and Infected Mushroom. The style has split into a wide range of sub-genres which include progressive trance, ambient trance, hard trance, dark trance and psytrance.
