Psytrance (psychedelic trance) is a sub-genre of trance which developed in the 1990s. It grew out of Goa trance, which was itself named for the scene in the Indian coastal region. The sub-genre is faster than trance, sitting in a tempo range of 135 and 150 BPM. It is characterised by extensive layering, with melodies and rhythms often changing every eight bars. It uses building, long-form song structures to induce a state of trance to listeners.

Psytrance features synthetic tones in the instruments used, along with manipulated samples. Some psytrance acts have found mainstream success, although the genre remains an underground phenomenon for the large part. Psytrance scenes are active worldwide, often centred around festival events.

Notable psytrance acts include Infected Mushroom, GMS, Hallucinogen, Astrix and Astral Projection. See also our related articles on trance and dark trance.
