Lounge music refers to easy-listening music which first developed in the US in the 1950s and 1960s. The term was not used to describe such music at the time, although has since become known as lounge music. Some lounge music is intended to give the listener the experience of being transported to a tranquil, relaxing environment.

Lounge music can often be heard playing in hotels, bars, restaurants and other public places. Similar music existed in the 1920s and 1930s, although it was then known as light music. Lounge music is not as generic sounding as Muzak.

Early lounge music was commonly influenced by jazz, while modern lounge music often steps into electronica, chillout and downtempo territory. Music of this style is frequently instrumental.
